Welcome to our first EPIC HOCKEY STARS newsletter.
EPIC HOCKEY STARS is a hockey dream of Oliver and his mother Carol Whiteley that is materialising into reality. Both being passionate about field hockey THEY want to make their impact into this growing sport. Although Oliver, a Springbok international, has decided to seek his future overseas, Carol is determined to continue this quest.
Like all sport one can only become proficient if the basics are strong. This is what EPIC STARS is offering to South African hockey, EPIC HOCKEY STARS is developing the grass roots of the sport offering coaching clinics for youngsters up to the age of 11, concentrating on Mini Hockey.
EPIC HOCKEY STARS club is based at Roedean School where a new astro has recently been laid and where Carol is a physical education teacher. Carol has gathered a keen support team around her with Cristy Mc Crorie and Dominic Mullender assisting with the coaching duties and Keith Norgate, Yumna Sono and Denise White handling the administration of the club. Carol realised it is important to have a strong administration team behind her to allow her to oversee the coaching staff.
The first “Stars” clinic has been a huge success drawing in an average of 50 children from Roedean and St Katherine's schools, these children bringing in their brothers, sisters and friends. The juniors of 6 to 9 years old occupy the first hour from 8.00 am to 9.00am and the older children 9 to 11 years old from 9.00am to 10.00am.
We are also very pleased to see Dads and Mums joining in to help the children with their hockey skills.
A significant improvement of the children’s’ skills has been noticed by all over this 10 week period, with the children thoroughly enjoying the experience. Mums and Dads don’t get a Saturday “lie in” these days as the kids are up and wanting to get to hockey.
ST ANDREWS FESTIVAL
Epic Hockey Stars entered their first club tournament at St Andrews during June. 6 teams were entered in their various age groups and all fared well in their first time out in their new Roedean green kit.
The “Stars” turned in some good performances against far more experienced opposition. Keirah van de Loosdrecht showed her ability by dribbling past several opponents and netting some excellent goals.
The experienced gained by the children will hold them in good stead for future tournaments.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
EPIC HOCKEY STARS aims to become the most respected mini hockey development club in Gauteng.
We aim to provide the children with the basic skills of the hockey game, provide them with a venue to interact with other children in a fun environment.
Further to hockey skills we feel it is equally important to work on building body strength with core exercises and strength of mind with the desire to compete and win. We want all the kids to be winners they must all become “Stars”.
We intend to build the club over time drawing in children from other schools, boys and girls alike.
We plan to offer them the opportunity to play in tournaments and matches against other clubs to compete and test their skills against others. We aim to become the club to challenge.
We aim to run the club in a professional manner and provide awards to improving players.
We are seeking assistance from any keen photographer amongst mums and dads who can take photographs of the kids in action at practices and matches, we need team photographs etc. We want to build a photo library that we can use to send pictures to the local newspapers.
Are there any Mums or Dads in the newspaper business who can assist with writing articles and getting them published into local newspapers?
We also need assistance with this newsletter, any person with any information, article or suggestions for content for the newsletter please forward all ideas to the email address at the end of this publication.
We intend publishing a coaching tip in each edition.
The kids should be practicing the Indian dribble (not the one down the front of their Tee shirt) at every opportunity. Front and reverse pull of the ball with their stick.
QUOTE FOR THE DAY
"The place to start your life's journey is with a dream."
"Your dream must be realistic and achievable, it must excite you and inspire you to keep going when all around you quit." Your dream becomes your goal and provides direction throughout your life.
